United States Department of Commerce

The United States Department of Commerce is an organization that creates conditions for economic growth and opportunity for all communities. Through its 13 bureaus, the department works to drive economic competitiveness, strengthen domestic industry, and spur the growth of quality jobs in all communities across the country and serves as the voice of business in the Federal Government. It was initially formed as the Department of Commerce and Labor but was renamed in 1913 when labor functions were moved to a new department. Over time, various bureaus were transferred to and from the Commerce Department, shaping its unique role and history.
